As you may know, the federal government’s Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP) offers an opportunity for struggling homeowners to stay in their homes by modifying their monthly mortgage payments to make them more affordable.  The United States Trustee Program has taken a number of steps to make sure that homeowners in bankruptcy are aware that HAMP may be an option to help them keep their homes.  Through a one-page fact sheet that is made available to debtors in both English and Spanish at the mandatory section 341 meeting of creditors, as well as a listing of frequently asked questions (also available in Spanish) and an informational video that are available on our Web site, we are working to spread the word about this important government assistance program.

As an approved debtor education provider, we are in a unique position to be able to ensure that distressed homeowners are made aware of the potential benefits of HAMP.  Accordingly, we have made the attached fact sheet and FAQs available at all post-filing debtor education sessions. As as part of your materials.  The web page is MailFilterGateway has detected a possible fraud attempt from "ttp:" claiming to be http://www.justice.gov/ust/eo/public_affairs/consumer_info/index.htm

The Making Homes Affordable Web site is http://makinghomesaffordable.gov which provides more detailed information about HAMP, including an eligibility self-assessment tool for homeowners.  This information will also be provided to students taking the phone instruction.
